The crypto market expanded by $840 billion over a three-month period. However, underneath the price increases, spot trading on major exchanges is declining while leveraged bets accumulate.

According to CoinGecko's Q3 2026 report, the crypto market capitalization jumped 39.6% to close to $3 trillion. But spot trading on the ten biggest centralized exchanges fell 14.2% compared with the prior quarter, reaching $1.65 trillion.

Higher prices require buyers. Weaker trading volume can make a rally more difficult to sustain and lead to sharper price moves if sellers exit quickly. Spot exchange volumes don't account for all trades, and activity picked up closer to September.

$100B in Futures Bets: The Bigger Danger

At the same time, open interest on the ten biggest perpetual futures exchanges climbed 40.6% to $102.2 billion. Open interest refers to outstanding derivatives contracts, many of which employ leverage to amplify profits and losses.

According to the report, open interest was last above $100 billion from May to November 2025.

That period included October 10, when a tariff threat from Donald Trump against China caused a selloff that escalated into over $19 billion in forced liquidations.

Bitcoin dropped 14.5% and Ethereum declined 12.2%. As leveraged positions were closed automatically, the selling accelerated, trapping traders who had anticipated the rally to persist.

Ethereum's Rally Contains Its Own Warning

In Q3, Ethereum rose 71% to $2,684, supported by $3.1 billion in U.S. spot ETF inflows. However, its average daily trading volume declined 23.2% to $11.5 billion.

Investors were paying much more for ETH while fewer dollars traded daily. ETF inflows offered genuine support, but lower trading activity casts doubt on how broadly the recovery is shared.

An increase in open interest alone does not imply traders are overwhelmingly bullish, nor that a crash is imminent.

Prices have bounced back more quickly than the market's underlying activity, leaving a smaller buffer for a sudden shock.
