Bitcoin Magazine presents the editor's letter for the Quantum Issue.
Quantum references are everywhere, but why would someone put a cat on a blockchain?
Time to be serious.
A fully operational quantum computer would pose a grave danger to Bitcoin. It represents the most tangible existential threat imaginable.
A core assumption of Bitcoin is that its cryptographic system produces unforgeable signatures. Following the protocol correctly ensures that only the legitimate owner can generate a spending signature, provided the private key remains secure.
Quantum computers would invalidate that assumption. The entire authentication mechanism that allows owners to prove ownership and authorize transactions would collapse. Without that assumption, the concept of ownership within Bitcoin's protocol becomes meaningless.
If that assumption fails, so does Bitcoin.
Fortunately, alternative cryptographic systems exist that are not vulnerable to quantum attacks. That is the positive side. However, each comes with trade-offs, and difficult decisions lie ahead.
Nearly every problem a quantum computer could cause has a solution—except the dilemma of which solution to adopt. Hence, this Quantum Issue.
This issue is more structured than previous ones to walk readers through the entire problem and solution landscape without requiring prior knowledge, given the technical depth.
The initial articles cover quantum computing itself—how it differs from classical computing, its significance, and the likelihood of near-term development.
The next set analyzes Bitcoin's vulnerability: the extent of exposure and how it might evolve.
The final set explores concrete or near-concrete solutions for securing bitcoin in a quantum-safe manner, along with managing a network-wide migration.
