Switzerland's FINMA has approved its first bitcoin ETF for retail investors, citing growing interest and bitcoin's trading history.
FINMA, Switzerland's financial regulator, has given the green light to the nation's debut bitcoin ETF, which will be available to retail investors.
The regulator announced on Tuesday that the decision reflects increasing Swiss interest in cryptocurrencies, especially bitcoin.
Bitcoin ETFs, particularly those in the U.S., have expanded the range of investors able to trade the top cryptocurrency. By purchasing shares listed on stock exchanges, investors can gain exposure to bitcoin in a secure and regulated manner.
“As early as 2021, FINMA authorised a fund for qualified investors that invests primarily in a basket of cryptocurrencies,” the announcement read.

“As Bitcoin has a long trading history and a particularly high trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies, FINMA has approved an exemption from the applicable risk diversification rules in this case.”
It added: “At the same time, FINMA emphasises that investments in Bitcoin — even through an approved ETF — remain highly risky.”
The statement did not disclose the asset manager or bank that will launch the product. Switzerland already offers crypto ETFs, but they are restricted to institutional or qualified investors.
When approved in 2024, U.S. bitcoin ETFs saw the most successful launch of any investment vehicle in history.
Now, traders, institutions, and individual investors can easily purchase shares that mirror the price of bitcoin without concerns about exchange access or custody.
These funds, overseen by major Wall Street firms including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley, hold more than $97 billion in assets, per CoinGlass data.
