Savings banks in Germany add crypto trading via DekaBank, allowing customers to trade five digital assets.
Savings banks in Germany are incorporating crypto trading into their applications through DekaBank, the Sparkassen's securities house. Customers can purchase and sell five digital assets without exiting their standard banking app.
This development places digital currencies alongside conventional banking services for individuals who have not dealt in crypto before. However, the service entails specific risks since the assets are not safeguarded by statutory deposit insurance.
Custody refers to the secure storage of digital assets, with a provider overseeing the private keys that protect them. With this offering, DekaBank maintains the assets centrally on behalf of its customers.
The service incorporates five cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Polygon. It targets self-directed investors, and no financial advice is available within the Sparkasse.

For every transaction, DekaBank supplies a binding price that it commits to for a defined period. Trading operates without fixed exchange hours, though maintenance periods and market disturbances may limit access.
Users can independently buy or sell the listed coins when the platform is operational.
Reportedly, over 230 savings banks have expressed interest, with five currently involved. Customer support is available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 18:00 and on Fridays until 17:00.
The 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index from Chainalysis ranks Germany 13th, highlighting that German users form a substantial segment of the market.
For Germany, the Sparkasse initiative provides these users with a familiar path to crypto trading.
Digital assets lack coverage under statutory deposit insurance, and price volatility can lead to total loss. DekaBank also cautions that trades may face delays or be unavailable at the desired time or price.
Custody operates differently from a bank deposit. Private keys are held in trust in a jointly managed Omnibus wallet, and withdrawals are permitted only to authorized crypto-asset providers.
Tax considerations add complexity. Currently, private gains from crypto sales are subject to a โฌ1,000 annual exemption limit. Tax outcomes depend on individual circumstances and may evolve.
As more banks join, the offering could attract increased attention, although the present number of participants remains limited.
