Gold advances 3.3% as USD drops, yields fall, and technicals back buyers

Gold rose 3.3% to $4,061.80 as a weaker dollar and lower Treasury yields combined with technical breakouts to drive the rally forward.

Gold advanced by over $130, a gain of 3.3%, to trade at $4061.80. During the session, it climbed as high as $4070.53, recovering from a low of $3919.93.

The advance is being supported by falling Treasury yields and a softer US currency. The 10-year US Treasury yield has declined by 6.6 basis points to 4.883%, close to its weakest reading since September 10.

Why do a falling dollar and lower yields bolster the gold price?

A cheaper US dollar reduces the price of gold for international purchasers. Since gold is globally quoted in dollars, a decline against the euro or yen means foreign buyers can acquire the same ounce for fewer units of their own currency, provided the dollar price stays steady. This dynamic can stimulate buying interest.

Reduced yields lower the opportunity cost tied to holding gold. The metal generates no interest income, so a drop in Treasury yields means investors sacrifice less potential interest by choosing gold over bonds, boosting the metal's relative appeal.

Technical levels formed the foundation for the move

Monday's low point tested the upward-sloping 100-week moving average and a lower channel trendline around $3870. Buyers used that support level to bid the price up, creating a launchpad for the current rally.

Buyers reinforced their grip by driving the price above the 100-hour moving average of $3960 and the 200-hour moving average of $3993.19. Breaching these levels flipped the short-term momentum upward, aiding the climb toward $4070.53.

Support levels held firm. Resistance points were broken. Buyers tightened their dominance.

The next upside challenge awaits near $4088

The upper channel trendline, which slopes downward and sits near $4088, serves as the next upside gauge. Sellers may push back against this level, while a break above it would define the risk. Following the strong advance, it also presents an opportunity for buyers to book some gains.

But if buyers can break through that trendline and hold above it, they would gain further motivation to extend the rally. They would then aim for the 38.2% retracement level at $4186, and subsequently the declining 100-day moving average around $4205.

What could undermine the bullish outlook?

Should sellers successfully defend the upper channel trendline, focus would shift back toward the natural support zone at $4000 and the 200-hour moving average close to $3993.

This region has become a key downside indicator. Remaining above it would preserve the short-term advantage for buyers. A drop back below it would erode that advantage and put the 100-hour moving average near $3960 back on the radar.

Trading lesson: Let technicals validate the narrative

While a softer dollar and lower yields create a favorable fundamental environment, technical analysis allows traders to map out their strategy.

The rebound from weekly support gave buyers a solid platform. Breaking above the hourly moving averages validated the strengthening momentum. Now, the upper channel trendline near $4088 presents the next challenge.

To prolong their control, buyers must break through that resistance level and remain above it. If they fail, traders have a clear reference point for gauging a possible reversal back toward support.
