Gold bounces off hourly moving averages as buyers step in

Gold rebounded after testing the 100- and 200-hour moving averages, holding support near $4,158. Upside resistance remains at the $4,223.51–$4,237.55 swing…

A day earlier, I had taken a bearish stance on gold after Kazakhstan said it was selling some of its reserves. Because trading was running on a semi-holiday schedule, I kept my assessment cautious, even while admitting the metal was nearing a key test at the 100- and 200-hour moving averages and that this area would determine the upcoming direction.

In the end, buyers came in to defend that crucial technical region. Gold has moved higher in the current session, but those same buyers still have more to accomplish before they can claim greater control.

The decline brought the price to the 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages, where willing buyers stepped in to halt the slide. The metal has since climbed back above those levels, trading near $4,184. That is a positive sign for the bulls. The immediate challenge is to push above and remain above the overhead resistance.

The hourly moving averages establish the risk parameters.

The 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages sit almost entirely on top of one another:

  • 100-hour moving average: $4,157.82
  • 200-hour moving average: $4,157.78

That makes the area near $4,158 the immediate support gauge. Holding above it keeps the recovery alive, while also giving traders a clearly defined level for measured risk.

A slip below and a sustained close under that mark, however, would strip the support defence of its significance. Sellers would regain greater control, with the focus turning again to the recent lows.

An important ceiling still awaits the buyers.

To the upside, the next key barrier is the swing area between $4,223.51 and $4,237.55. That zone has acted as both support and resistance on several occasions dating back to June.

The 61.8% retracement at $4,229.43 lies within that zone, adding yet another technical reason to monitor the price when it reaches that region.

Buyers have successfully defended the support, but they have not broken the ceiling. Moving above the swing area and holding there would be a much more substantial step toward gaining firm upside control.

Directly above that region is the 100-day moving average at $4,252.80. To strengthen the broader recovery, buyers must also clear that level. If they manage it, the 50% retracement at $4,318.18 would become the next target.

Conversely, should sellers press against those resistance levels and push the price back down, the rally would remain a mere recovery within the larger decline from the late-August high.

Lesson for traders: defending support is just the first step.

This situation demonstrates why traders need to distinguish between a valid support test and a confirmed shift in the broader bias.

Holding the hourly moving averages shows that buyers are ready to defend that area, but it does not automatically mean they can overcome the sellers waiting above.

The steps are clear:

  • Stay above the hourly moving averages to protect the recovery.
  • Break through the swing area to breach a ceiling that has been tested time and again.
  • Move clearly above the 100-day moving average to reinforce a bullish bias.

A brief move through resistance is only the first step. If the price cannot remain above it, sellers will have reason to lean against that level again. The follow-through matters most.

For now, support near $4,158 keeps buyers in the near-term fight, while $4,223.51–$4,237.55 and $4,252.80 remain the hurdles to the upside. The next clue will come from the price action.
