Gold's retreat from its August peak has brought it directly back down to test the level that originally sparked the upward move. On the chart, two support zones are highlighted: a wider foundation near $4,000 that held for about six weeks from late June through July, and a more compact launching area around $4,250 to $4,270 that price cleared in mid-August before surging to a top of $4,696.76 on August 25.
Right now, the critical focus is on that launch pad being retested. On September 14, the low print was $4,253.58, right inside that range, and the daily close finished back above it at $4,298.80. This is a live test of a support-resistance flip: the zone that powered the breakout is now being asked to hold during the decline, and so far it has managed to do so.
The falling trendline drawn from the August high completes the second part of the setup. It has capped every rebound attempt during the pullback, and price is currently sitting right against it.
A daily close above that downtrend line, combined with price staying above $4,250, would bolster the idea that this pullback is stabilizing rather than extending. If $4,250 is broken and that break does not hold, the $4,000 base would come back into focus as the next key area to monitor.
A level that triggers a breakout often becomes the first spot where buyers step in on the way back down. Watching whether an old breakout zone holds on retest is one of the most straightforward ways to determine if a pullback is merely corrective or something more serious.
