At the Republican National Committee's midterm convention in Dallas this week, President Donald Trump addressed attendees. He pledged a $5,000 payment to every adult American if the GOP retains control of the House and Senate.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note is trading close to 4.85%, marking its highest point since 2023. That is pushing up rates on mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards across the country, as yields have hit multi-year highs this month.
Higher oil prices and growing fiscal deficits are among the elements keeping yields elevated. Reduced Treasury purchases by foreign buyers add extra strain ahead of the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting.
Total U.S. government debt topped $40 trillion for the first time this year. It currently stands at $40.1 trillion, an increase of $2.67 trillion from one year earlier, intensifying the same borrowing cost pressures many households are already experiencing.
At the RNC's midterm gathering in Dallas, speakers largely avoided directly criticizing Trump over rate concerns. Bloomberg's Josh Wingrove reported on the situation from the event.
Some Republicans, however, blamed previous migration policy for housing expenses or promised unspecified savings in healthcare.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis opposed the dividend plan on Thursday, arguing it would worsen debt and inflation.
That indicates discomfort among even Trump supporters regarding the fiscal cost of the proposal.
Trump's national approval rating has fallen to around 38%, according to poll aggregator Silver Bulletin. Republicans are also confronting a competitive Texas Senate race, as covered in BeInCrypto's midterm odds reporting.
Trump has encouraged supporters to vote as though he were on the ballot himself. He remains concerned about turnout without his name at the top, in a midterm cycle where the GOP has historically performed poorly.
