USD/JPY keeps sliding as yen touches seven-month peak; CPI, BoJ eyed
The yen strengthened to a seven-month high, extending USD/JPY's slide as traders await US CPI and BoJ guidance.
Arthur Hayes says a weaker EUR/JPY, possibly below 140 by 2027, points to Fed liquidity that could boost crypto.
A decline in EUR/JPY may set off a new round of crypto liquidity, according to Arthur Hayes. In his view, the currency trend points to more dollar creation by the Federal Reserve.
Hayes, who serves as Maelstrom's chief investment officer, expects the cross to drop from roughly 185 to under 140 by June 2027. He ties that outlook to the currency approach of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The New York Fed offloaded euros in July to help finance Japan's yen rescue. The operation drew on the Treasury's Exchange Stabilization Fund (ESF) instead of dollars.
That reallocation, Hayes contends, foreshadows a broader dynamic. Partner nations receive dollar liquidity even as the Fed's balance sheet stays formally unchanged.
Senator Elizabeth Warren has already called on Bessent to justify the ESF's use. He has yet to disclose the total amount used.
Hayes further highlights the Fed's increasing reliance on repo purchases to shore up demand for Treasuries. Comparable repo patterns support a separate BeInCrypto report linking Bessent's buyback initiative to a $224,000 Bitcoin calculation.
His family office, Maelstrom, maintains a structural long position in Bitcoin (BTC) despite short-term volatility.
France is one factor behind Hayes' EUR/JPY forecast. In his most recent newsletter, he argues that widening sovereign yields and fragile French banks could compel the Banque de France to resort to unofficial stimulus. Such a move would arrive before the country's 2027 presidential vote.
This is Hayes' personal construct rather than an announced policy development. Neither French nor European Central Bank officials have hinted at such action.
He also points to the expanding spread between French and German government debt yields. That gap, he says, is close to the widest seen since the euro-area crisis of 2011.
Even so, Hayes contends that stress among French banks could diminish their participation in short-term funding markets. That spread, in his view, would draw the Fed further into repo buying to preserve Treasury market operations.
A softer EUR/JPY, in Hayes' assessment, is the quickest leading indicator of accelerating liquidity.
Whether the euro follows Hayes' timetable is still unconfirmed and conjectural. Should the pair continue sliding through France's elections next year, that alone might serve as the signal.
For their next liquidity clue, crypto market participants could wind up monitoring a currency cross rather than ETF inflows.
