Huang: AGI has arrived, cites OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claimed AGI has been achieved with OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, trained on 100K of his company's chips. OpenAI has not confirmed.

NVIDIA chief executive Jensen Huang claimed artificial intelligence had crossed a milestone that researchers thought remained distant. He also sells the machines that achieved it.

On Sunday, he posted that OpenAI's latest ChatGPT model was trained using his company's processors. He then added a four-word statement that no AI lab would utter.

What Huang Claimed

AGI refers to artificial general intelligence, software capable of performing most cognitive tasks a human can. There is no consensus on when it will be achieved. Huang declared it has already arrived.

GPT-6 Astra, trained on ~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72. From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years.

AGI has arrived. Congratulations @OpenAI team.

NVIDIA previously sold its chips in groups of eight per board. The design was later revised. Now, 72 chips are housed in a single unit, connected to function as a single large processor.

The change cost billions of dollars. It only yields returns if a customer constructs something massive.

OpenAI's latest model is that massive project. Huang stated that approximately 100,000 of these units were used to train it.

There is one peculiarity. His initial post mentioned 300,000. He removed that post and issued a new one with the lower number. NVIDIA has not explained the discrepancy.

his original tweet said 300k GPUs

so it's possible they did pre-training on 100k gpus at stargate, and then RL with 300k GPUs https://t.co/JPb45iQpRT

The Financial Picture and the Catch

NVIDIA generated $89 billion in AI computer sales over three months. That is more than double the figure from a year earlier. Huang stated it plainly on the earnings call.

“Now, compute is revenue,” Huang said on the earnings call.

OpenAI has not itself declared that AGI has arrived. Its president, Greg Brockman, held back from making that claim. The only person making the declaration stands to benefit financially when others believe it.

The partnership between the two companies is less significant than it appears. A $100 billion agreement announced in 2025 was never finalized. In June, BeInCrypto reported that OpenAI had been quietly purchasing fewer NVIDIA chips.

Huang concluded his post with a pledge. An additional 400,000 chips will be coming online soon. Markets are likely to focus on that figure rather than the AGI discussion.

“Achieving AGI by 2026 is wild, it was supposed to be 2029+,” remarked one user.
