Hyperliquid aims to build an on-chain financial marketplace

Hyperliquid is a crypto project building a blockchain-based financial marketplace for derivatives and other assets, drawing institutional interest.

Hyperliquid stands out among crypto projects. The platform is working to create a blockchain-based trading venue for digital and conventional assets. The core investment idea is that financial markets may shift to blockchain technology, making Hyperliquid a potential beneficiary of that shift.

Hyperliquid first gained traction with its decentralized perps exchange. Perpetual futures let traders take leveraged long or short bets without holding the asset and with no expiration. These contracts are now a major crypto product with high trading volumes.

So what exactly is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid differentiated itself by merging DeFi's transparency and self-custody with the user experience of a centralized exchange. Instead of solely using automated market makers, it employs an on-chain order book, enabling trading via bids and offers akin to traditional markets.

Hyperliquid now leads among decentralized perps platforms, capturing a significant portion of decentralized perpetual open interest and challenging centralized exchanges in derivatives volume. The project is expanding from crypto derivatives to a wider financial marketplace. Through its HIP-3 framework, developers can launch perpetual markets for assets like equities, commodities and indices.

Hyperliquid aims to build infrastructure that can represent any financial market, not just crypto exchanges for Bitcoin, Ethereum and others. Traditional markets are fragmented: stocks, futures, and commodities each have separate systems, with settlement involving brokers, clearing houses, custodians and banks. Trading hours are also restricted.

Blockchain can unite trading, collateral, and settlement on one system. It doesn't shut at 4 p.m.; markets can run around the clock, globally accessible to the same liquidity. Hyperliquid is developing a high-performance implementation of this concept.

Picture trading Bitcoin, an equity index, a commodity, and other assets on the same blockchain, using shared collateral with on-chain settlement. That represents a bigger opportunity than building a mere crypto exchange. This is why Hyperliquid's move into real-world assets may outweigh its current crypto trading. If tokenized equities, commodities, and other instruments gain traction globally, an exchange supporting them could attract far more trading volume.

Signs of this shift already exist. HIP-3 markets have expanded quickly and now account for a notable portion of Hyperliquid's trades. The key question is whether this evolves from a crypto-native test into a real financial market alternative. That leads to HYPE, the platform's native token.

The HYPE token

HYPE's key feature is its link to the protocol's economic output. Hyperliquid uses fees to buy HYPE via its Assistance Fund, with some purchased tokens later taken out of circulation. This ties platform activity to token demand. Simplified: greater trading activity results in higher fees, which fund more HYPE purchases, potentially reducing circulating supply and increasing value accrual.

HYPE is not like company stock. Token holders lack ownership of Hyperliquid as shareholders would, and protocol growth doesn't guarantee higher token prices. Still, the structure is rare in crypto, linking platform activity directly to the token. That has drawn institutional attention.

Since its November 2024 inception, HYPE has appreciated against USDT.

Institutional attention and the investment case

A prominent case is Stanley Druckenmiller's Duquesne Family Office. Instead of purchasing HYPE outright, Duquesne reported a stake in Hyperliquid Strategies (ticker PURR), a Nasdaq-listed firm mainly focused on acquiring HYPE. This offers investors a conventional equity way to gain exposure to Hyperliquid. The firm aims to gather HYPE and boost per-share exposure.

Theoretically, an investor gains if Hyperliquid draws more traders, raises fees, buys back more HYPE, and grows its ecosystem. A rising HYPE price can boost the company's treasury value. More traders mean higher volume, which produces more fees for HYPE buybacks. A bigger, more valuable ecosystem attracts developers and market makers, improving liquidity and platform appeal, which in turn brings more traders and activity.

This is the core of the investment case. Hyperliquid doesn't have to supplant the entire traditional financial system to be highly significant; just grabbing a notable portion of global derivatives, tokenized assets, and other financial activity could build a substantial enterprise.

Technologically, the model appeals for several reasons. Blockchain markets can run 24/7, settle quickly, and enable programmable assets. Developers can build apps directly on the trading infrastructure, fostering an ecosystem instead of a mere exchange.

Hyperliquid Strategies (PURR) recently reached a new all-time high stock price.

Risks involved

Competition tops the list. Centralized exchanges like Binance and Coinbase hold vast liquidity, user bases, and institutional ties. Other decentralized exchanges also vie intensely for derivatives activity. So Hyperliquid must keep its tech edge and liquidity to defend its share.

Regulatory uncertainty is another issue. As Hyperliquid ventures into equities, commodities, and real-world assets, it faces increased traditional financial regulation. Its capacity to enter major markets may thus be a key factor in long-term growth.

Token supply also matters. HYPE has planned unlocks, releasing new tokens that could cause selling pressure. The buyback must create enough demand to counter that supply for the token to fully benefit from ecosystem growth.

How to gain exposure to Hyperliquid

The simplest method is purchasing HYPE directly. That gives ecosystem exposure but involves crypto risks: high volatility, regulatory unknowns, token unlocks, and tech risks.

Another option is Hyperliquid Strategies, a Nasdaq-listed firm linked to the HYPE treasury, trading under PURR. This offers exposure via a traditional stock.

The crucial point: Hyperliquid's appeal extends beyond token price. The central thesis is that financial markets may go on-chain, and a fast, liquid, always-on exchange could capture a significant part of that shift. If so, Hyperliquid could transform from a successful crypto derivatives exchange into an on-chain financial exchange offering huge potential gains for early backers. This explains why institutional investors like Druckenmiller have taken notice.
