Why Bitcoin is not facing a near-term quantum threat

Bitcoin enters October up 9% but faces a $4.35 billion long liquidation risk as ETF inflows slow.
At the start of October, bitcoin is trading roughly 9% higher than its closing price on the Fed's rate hike day, following a September that historical averages suggested would be negative.
The outlook for bitcoin in October hinges on which buyers continue to accumulate.
This year has been different. August's median return since 2011 stands at -7.15%, yet bitcoin (BTC) rose 25%. September's median is -2.34%, but BTC climbed nearly 6%.
October has historically been more favorable. Bitcoin has increased in 10 out of the last 15 Octobers, with a median gain of 11.2%, based on CryptoRank monthly data. Notably, when September was positive, October followed suit in four out of six instances.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows for seven consecutive trading days starting September 17, accumulating $2.98 billion. However, the September 25 inflow of $134.47 million represented only 13% of the $998.95 million peak seen on September 21, according to SoSoValue flow data.
In August, the buying streak lasted nine sessions with total inflows of $3.04 billion, and daily inflows never fell below 38% of the peak day. After the streak ended on August 28, bitcoin dropped 5.8% by September 15. Despite this risk, some buyers remain active.
Long-term holders are stepping in. The Hodler Net Position Change metric, which tracks whether coins held for months are being accumulated or sold, was negative from August 2 to August 30, indicating selling pressure. Since August 31, it has turned positive.
The metric dipped to 16,415 BTC on September 25 before rising to 23,172 BTC on September 27. Holders are accumulating during the lull in ETF buying. However, a significant risk is also forming.
Liquidation heatmaps reveal concentrations of leveraged positions vulnerable to forced closure. On Binance, positions opened over the past seven days are tilted short, with $1.96 billion above the current price versus $1.03 billion of longs below. A modest upward move could trigger a short squeeze.
But the 30-day liquidation map highlights the danger. Long positions total $4.35 billion down to approximately $74,170, compared to $1.65 billion in shorts. October has a history of such events. On October 10, 2025, more than $19 billion in leveraged bets were liquidated.
On the two-day timeframe, bitcoin has been moving within a descending channel since January 13. Buy-side volume has declined since February 6, and the late-September rally stalled at $87,360, close to the channel's upper boundary.
The 50-period exponential moving average (EMA), which places greater weight on recent data, is at $74,117. It is nearing a bullish crossover with the 100-period EMA at $74,312. Sell-side volume has also decreased since September 22, allowing the crossover to develop.
The immediate target is to recapture $84,433. Above $87,360, resistance levels stand at $90,288, $99,764, and $115,094. If bitcoin falls below $80,811, reduced ETF inflows could push it to $74,957, near the EMAs and the concentration of long positions.
Analyst’s View: Historical patterns and long-term holder accumulation support a positive October. However, weakening ETF inflows and the $4.35 billion long liquidation risk argue against it. A two-day closing price above $87,360 combined with renewed ETF buying would bolster bullish prospects, while a break below $80,811 would bring the $74,000 area into focus.
