SK Hynix Slides 7.74% as Dow Rallies; Seoul Gauges AI Risks
SK Hynix shares fell 7.74% and KOSPI slipped 1.98% as Korean chip stocks dropped on worries that the new Democrat-led Congress will tighten AI rules.
OpenAI lowered its funding target by $10 billion as investors wait for Anthropic's IPO price before committing more capital.
According to the Financial Times, some investors are waiting for Anthropic's market debut before committing more capital to OpenAI. In the meantime, the ChatGPT developer has reduced its fundraising goal by $10 billion.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, is moving toward a public listing. Amid a decline in technology stocks, OpenAI's own valuation dropped by $150 billion, from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion.
The Financial Times, citing an individual familiar with the matter, reported that the fundraising effort was encountering difficulties even before the market downturn.
“There has been zero clamouring. All the prior times [OpenAI] have been on there's been a frenzy. This time is a bit of a thud,” they said.
Following that, stock prices fell. The Nasdaq-100 shed roughly $2 trillion in value during October's selloff in technology shares, as investors began to question the expenses tied to artificial intelligence.
By the Friday deadline, some investors had reduced their contributions. Reuters reported that the initial close is now anticipated to be below $20 billion.
On October 23, BeInCrypto pointed out that risk. The shortfall now stands at $10 billion.
OpenAI has cut its fundraising target to $20B from $30B and lowered its target valuation to $1.25T from $1.4T, per FT
Some investors reduced commitments amid the AI selloff
The initial close is expected to fall short of $20B, with a later offering potentially filling the gap
A consortium of UAE investors, including state-backed fund MGX, is expected to be the largest purchaser. In exchange, OpenAI gains an option to lease new computing capacity in the region.
Founders Fund, Coatue, Sequoia Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz are also anticipated to participate.
Some institutional investors trimmed their commitments at the $1.25 trillion valuation. Wealthy individuals will later be offered shares at the same price.
Early investors are still in a favorable position. Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank purchased shares in March at an $852 billion valuation. The current price is roughly 47% higher.
The decisive moment comes in the next few weeks. Anthropic could debut on Nasdaq as early as mid-November, providing investors with the valuation they had requested. Reuters reported that OpenAI wanted to finalize its funding round before that date, as both companies draw from the same investor base.
“The market needs to see a successful IPO. These companies need funding,” said Jimmy Chang of the Rockefeller Global Family Office, who holds stakes in both labs.
OpenAI plans to go public in 2027. Anthropic will face the public market first.
