The Canadian dollar barely moved as US-Canada trade tensions intensified, with Trump announcing a Bombardier ban and Canada imposing retaliatory tariffs.
PBOC is expected to set the yuan reference rate at 6.7344 per dollar, according to a Reuters poll. The fixing is a key policy signal.
The PBOC will announce the daily USD/CNY midpoint around 0115 GMT (2115 US Eastern time), a fixing that remains a key signal in Asian foreign exchange markets.
China operates a managed float regime where the yuan can move within a set range around a daily central parity fixed by the central bank. The current band allows onshore trading within 2% on either side of the midpoint.
The PBOC calculates the midpoint each morning using several inputs. These include the prior session's close, major currency moves especially the dollar, overall global FX conditions, and domestic factors like capital flows, growth trends and financial stability objectives. The fixing is not purely formulaic, giving authorities discretion to guide market expectations.
After the midpoint is released, the onshore yuan can trade freely within the band. If the currency is pressured to the band's limits, the central bank may intervene to smooth volatility. Such intervention can involve direct yuan purchases or sales, liquidity adjustments, or guidance through state-owned banks.
Consequently, the daily fixing is often viewed as a policy signal rather than a purely technical level. A stronger-than-expected midpoint is typically read as the PBOC resisting depreciation, while a weaker fixing suggests acceptance of a softer yuan, frequently due to dollar strength or domestic economic headwinds.
During episodes of global turbulence, such as shifts in US rate expectations, trade tensions or capital flow pressures, the midpoint gains added significance. For investors, it offers insight into Beijing's currency priorities, as it balances export competitiveness, capital stability and financial market confidence.
