NZDUSD buyers defend 0.5579 support, stall at 200-HMA
NZDUSD held above 0.5579 support after weak NZ jobs data, but the rebound stalled at the 200-hour moving average, leaving the pair in a technical standoff.
The PBOC is expected to set the USD/CNY midpoint near 6.6489 at 0115 GMT, a fixing watched as a policy signal across Asian foreign exchange markets.
The People's Bank of China will publish its daily USD/CNY reference rate at roughly 0115 GMT, which is 2115 US Eastern time. The fixing still ranks among the most keenly tracked indicators in Asia's currency markets.
China runs a managed floating exchange rate system. Under it, the renminbi (yuan) may trade inside a prescribed band around a central reference rate, or midpoint, that the PBOC sets every trading day. The band in force lets the currency move 2% either side of the official midpoint during onshore hours.
Each morning the midpoint is decided from a range of inputs: the prior session's closing price, how major currencies β the US dollar above all β have moved, wider international FX conditions, and domestic considerations such as capital flows, growth momentum and financial stability goals. It is not a purely mechanical calculation, which leaves policymakers room to steer market expectations.
Once the midpoint is announced, onshore USD/CNY is free to trade within the permitted band. Should market pressure drive the yuan toward either edge of that range, the central bank may step in to smooth volatility β buying or selling yuan directly, adjusting liquidity conditions, or guiding through state-owned banks.
The daily fixing is therefore often read as a policy signal rather than a merely technical reference point. A CNY midpoint stronger than expected is usually taken as a sign the PBOC is pushing back against depreciation pressure, whereas a weaker fixing can suggest tolerance for a softer currency, often in response to dollar strength or domestic economic headwinds.
When global volatility picks up β shifts in US rate expectations, trade tensions or capital flow pressures β the fixing carries more weight. For investors it offers a reading of Beijing's currency priorities as the authorities balance competitiveness, capital stability and financial market confidence.
