Reuters expects PBOC to fix USD/CNY at 6.7177

Reuters estimates the PBOC will set the USD/CNY midpoint at 6.7177, a key signal for forex markets.

Around 0115 GMT (2115 US Eastern time), the People's Bank of China is scheduled to announce its daily USD/CNY reference rate. This fixing is among the most-watched indicators in Asian forex markets.

China runs a managed float, meaning the renminbi (yuan) can trade within a set range around a daily central reference rate, or midpoint, determined by the PBOC. In onshore trading, the currency is allowed to fluctuate up to 2% either side of the official midpoint.

The PBOC sets the midpoint each morning using several factors, including the prior day's close, moves in key currencies (especially the US dollar), global FX conditions, and domestic factors like capital flows, growth dynamics, and financial stability. The calculation is not purely mechanical, giving policymakers leeway to shape market expectations.

After the midpoint is released, onshore USD/CNY can trade within the permitted band. When market forces drive the yuan to either boundary, the central bank may intervene to reduce volatility. Such intervention might involve buying or selling yuan outright, altering liquidity, or signaling through state-owned banks.

Consequently, the daily fixing is seen as a policy cue, not merely a technical benchmark. A midpoint that is stronger than anticipated usually suggests the PBOC is pushing back against depreciation. A weaker fixing signals acceptance of a softer exchange rate, often reflecting dollar gains or domestic economic challenges.

During times of elevated global uncertainty — changes in US rate outlook, trade frictions, or capital flow strains — the midpoint becomes even more important. It offers investors a window into Beijing's currency strategy, as it weighs competitiveness, capital stability, and market confidence.
