BOJ rate hike likely, yen rally at risk
BOJ expected to hike rates next week, but yen rally may be limited if Ueda signals caution.
The PBOC is expected to set its daily USD/CNY reference rate at 6.7086, according to a Reuters estimate.
Around 0115 GMT (2115 US Eastern time), the People's Bank of China will announce its daily USD/CNY reference rate, a figure closely tracked in Asian FX markets.
China uses a managed float system where the yuan can move within a set band around a daily midpoint set by the PBOC. Currently, the band allows the currency to trade up to 2% above or below that midpoint during onshore hours.
The PBOC calculates the midpoint each morning using several factors: the prior day's closing price, changes in key currencies (especially the US dollar), global FX conditions, and domestic factors like capital flows, growth, and financial stability. The calculation is not fully mechanical, giving policymakers room to shape expectations.
After the midpoint is released, onshore USD/CNY can trade within the band. Should the yuan approach either limit, the PBOC may intervene to reduce volatility. Intervention methods include direct yuan purchases or sales, liquidity adjustments, or guidance via state-owned banks.
Thus, the daily fixing is seen as a policy clue, not merely a technical level. A firmer-than-expected CNY midpoint usually signals the PBOC's resistance to depreciation, while a weaker fixing suggests acceptance of a softer yuan, often due to dollar strength or domestic headwinds.
During times of global volatility—like changes in US rate expectations, trade disputes, or capital flow shifts—the fixing becomes more important. It offers investors a window into Beijing's currency strategy, which balances competitiveness, capital stability, and market confidence.
