Bitcoin Defies September Slump, Faces Demand Test in October
Bitcoin ended September up 6.33%, but demand from ETF buyers has faded and long-term holders are selling, testing the October outlook.
Michael Saylor posted a Bitcoin chart with the caption 'Even more orange,' a signal that often precedes a Strategy Bitcoin purchase announcement.
Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy (previously MicroStrategy), shared a Bitcoin chart on Sunday carrying the caption “Even more orange.” Such posts have frequently appeared one day ahead of the company announcing fresh Bitcoin acquisitions.
Strategy stands as the biggest publicly traded firm with Bitcoin holdings. The company typically discloses its buys in filings submitted to US regulators, often on Mondays.
The color orange is strongly associated with Bitcoin. In Saylor's posts, each orange dot represents a purchase, with larger dots indicating larger transactions.
“Even more orange,” Saylor posted.
The previous Sunday, Saylor shared a comparable chart with the caption “A little more orange.” Later that day, BeInCrypto covered Saylor's hint and noted that the company's Monday filing would provide confirmation.
Confirmation came quickly. On Monday, the company announced the acquisition of 950 BTC for roughly $76 million, at an average price of $79,670 per coin, as per its official ledger. This purchase increased its total Bitcoin stash to 846,000.
The pattern is not foolproof, however. In the week prior, Strategy's regulatory filing indicated no Bitcoin purchases or sales.
Strategy's activities this year have included sales as well. According to its ledger, the company sold a total of 6,916 BTC across four transactions from June 30 to August 10.
Additionally, last week Strategy allocated $174 million to repurchase STRC, a preferred stock that provides monthly dividend payments. This amount was over double the sum it spent on Bitcoin during the same period.
Bitcoin is currently trading around $84,974, up approximately 1% in the past day. That price is roughly 13% above Strategy's average purchase cost of about $75,416 per Bitcoin. Earlier this month, the company was only 2% above its cost basis.
Monday's regulatory disclosure will reveal if the 950 BTC purchase from last week marked the start of consistent acquisitions or a more measured cadence.
