Silver Touches 2026 Low, Sparks Crash Fears

Silver fell to a 2026 low on Friday. Traders are betting on further drops as support near $52 is tested.

Silver has shed over half its value since January, and many market participants are now bracing for additional decline.

On Friday, the metal ended the session at $53.83, a drop of roughly 56% from its all-time peak of $121.74. This represents the lowest close of the year for silver, and came as gold also traded under $4,000.

The downturn began as the speculative surge from January unwound under the weight of higher margin demands and forced liquidation. More recently, climbing oil prices have added pressure, raising the prospect of greater inflation and higher US interest rates.

Because silver yields no interest, it becomes a less appealing holding in such a climate. Worries over industrial consumption are compounding the strain.

Behind the Growing Bearish Bets on Silver

According to The Kobeissi Letter, silver's three-month put-call skew rose by 10 points over four weeks, hitting minus 3. That is the highest level for the metric since early July.

This indicates a greater number of traders are seeking insurance against further price slides. The shift points to mounting concern among investors about another sharp downturn.

Over the three weeks ending October 13, hedge funds and commodity trading advisers sold off $2.2 billion worth of silver futures. These instruments allow traders to wager on the metal's future direction.

Such selling highlights a paring back of exposure by large-scale investors, coming as hope for a rebound fades.

Where Might Silver Prices Head Next?

Technical analyst Kev_Capital_TA views the $52–$55 range as a crucial support zone, after which a recovery toward $63–$72 could unspool.

"If that support holds, all those crowded shorts become fuel for a bounce," he wrote.

A breach below $52 might open the way to $39–$45. For Michaël van de Poppe, the $40–$45 zone represents a potential entry point for traders, with a longer-term target of $22–$26.

Peter Schiff, by contrast, views silver as appealing at prices beneath $54.

When I'm looking at Silver, I don't think we'll see a bull run soon. We've had it. It's shown a rally of 7-8x in a matter of 2-3 years. Quite unusual and the typical price action of Silver is that it will fall back all of this run.

Silver Demand in India Raises Fresh Worry

India has given the go-ahead for roughly 6,500 metric tons of silver shipments in the run-up to its festive period. Still, as noted by Reuters, buyers are staying cautious following the metal's recent losses.

The premium for silver locally has dropped to just 45 cents an ounce from $2.50, a sign that supply constraints are loosening despite subdued demand levels.

As the Federal Reserve meets on October 27-28, the path of silver likely hinges on the defense of the $52 level and the return of physical purchasers.
