Sovereign AI is taking shape as Wall Street's latest major AI opportunity. Rather than wagering on which chatbot will come out on top, investors are focusing on who manages the data and infrastructure behind each model.

The concept first came up on the Compound and Friends podcast, where analyst Dan Ives pointed to Nvidia and Palantir as early winners.

Understanding Sovereign AI

Sovereign AI refers to a nation or company managing its own data and AI models without relying on another entity's platform.

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has advocated for a national approach to this concept for years. He has urged governments in India, Japan, France, and Canada to retain their data domestically.

Rather than outsourcing to foreign model providers, Huang argues that nations should develop their own infrastructure. He describes the resulting investment as the biggest infrastructure buildout in history, with projections of $85 trillion over 15 years.

In July, Huang invested £500 million in UK cloud firm NScale, calling Britain a future "AI superpower."

Palantir is applying a similar strategy for businesses. In June, it partnered with Nvidia on a Sovereign AI Operating System.

This system enables companies to train models on their own hardware, keeping model weights in-house instead of relying on rented hosted APIs.

Palantir's stock has gained renewed attention from Wall Street since then. Its US commercial revenue surged 149% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026, a jump the company attributes to sovereign demand.

Tom Lee's Predictions for What's Ahead

Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee has cautioned against giving up AI control. On the podcast, he highlighted the dangers of depending on models built and trained by others.

China controlling these models will make these recursive loops will like make you dumb you know like or they'll like lead you to wrong conclusions like it's a kind of mind control.

Lee made these remarks on the Compound and Friends podcast.

Lee also suggests institutional investors still have room to increase their AI stakes, noting that the largest gains so far are limited to a small group of early investors.

Whether sovereign AI represents a real advantage or just smart marketing remains to be seen. But with Nvidia and Palantir both embracing the concept, it looks set to remain a key topic.
