Tether's $4.5B nine-month profit leaves Bitcoin pile above USDT cushion

Tether posted $4.5B in nine-month profit, but USDT's reserve cushion is now smaller than its Bitcoin holdings; a 29% drop would erase it.

Tether generated $4.5 billion in profit in the first nine months of 2026, according to its third-quarter attestation, published Friday. The $7.95 billion buffer meant to shield USDT holders from a shortfall now trails the $8.37 billion of Bitcoin (BTC) parked in the reserves.

Three months lifted that cushion from $4.11 billion to nearly double. In the previous quarter, gold and Bitcoin—the same two assets that move it—had halved that buffer, tying USDT holders' exposure to those prices as much as to US Treasuries.

Why a $4.5 Billion Profit Expanded the Cushion by Only $1.66 Billion

Net operating profit is the performance gauge Tether uses for itself. Most of it comes from interest on $132.4 billion in US Treasury bills and reverse repos—short-term loans backed by Treasuries—with gold and Bitcoin price moves excluded.

Prepared by accounting firm BDO, that attestation factors those moves in. Under that accounting, the buffer grew by $1.66 billion over nine months, not $4.5 billion.

In July, BeInCrypto reported the cushion was halved in Q2 as gold and Bitcoin fell, even though Tether logged $1.5 billion in profit for the quarter. Friday's release did not state what drove the $3.8 billion rebound.

Tether just released its quarterly USDT attestation for Q3 2026.

Tether had a great third quarter of 2026, with ~1.5B in net operating profit. Tether’s reserve buffer continued to strengthen, nearly doubling to $7.95 billion from $4.1 billion at the end of Q2, an increase of

How a 29% Fall in Gold and Bitcoin Would Affect USDT's Backing

In the reserve, gold and Bitcoin combine for $27.45 billion. By BeInCrypto's calculation from the attested figures, a 29% drop across both would erase the entire buffer.

Gold, Bitcoin, secured loans and other investments together total $47.7 billion, equivalent to 25% of reserves.

In November 2025, with the share at 24%, S&P Global Ratings lowered USDT to “weak,” its lowest stability score. The agency pointed to Bitcoin exposure exceeding the buffer and to custodians and counterparties that had not been disclosed.

The remaining 73% is Tether's defense. Around $139.6 billion is parked in Treasuries, reverse repos and cash; BDO backed the figures while cautioning that the valuations are premised on normal trading conditions, not stressed markets.

“Our responsibility is to make sure USD₼ remains dependable when people need it most, including when markets and financial systems come under pressure,” Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, in the release.

Within a single year the buffer has moved between $8.23 billion and $4.11 billion, while circulating USDT held near $183.5 billion.

Gold and Bitcoin prices are still what the world's largest stablecoin needs to hold its safety net in place, even after a first clean KPMG audit.
