U.S. stocks climb as major indexes hold support

U.S. broad-market indexes moved higher after holding support levels on Friday, with the S&P 500 and both Nasdaq benchmarks up close to 0.70%.

U.S. equities are climbing today after a mixed week in which technology names absorbed much of the selling pressure.

The Dow industrial average managed a modest weekly advance, while the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 all closed the week lower. The weekly tally:

  • Dow industrial average: +0.41%.

  • S&P 500: βˆ’0.47%.

  • Nasdaq Composite: βˆ’0.71%.

  • Nasdaq 100: βˆ’0.79%.

Today, the S&P 500 and both Nasdaq indices are rebounding, with gains close to 0.70%. That is an encouraging start for buyers. From a technical perspective, however, the open question is whether a bounce off support can develop into a more durable recovery.

Last week's selling pushed the indices toward identifiable support areas, and demand stepped in. Now those buyers must show they can overcome resistance above.

Holding support is the first stage. Breaking resistance is the second.

S&P 500: Support has held, and the next focus is the hourly moving averages.

The S&P 500 found buying interest near the upper end of a swing area between 7,573 and 7,617, while staying just above its rising 100-day moving average at 7,604.

That combination gave buyers reason to lean against support. The swing area marks a zone where price has reacted before, and the 100-day moving average supplies another reference inside that same zone.

When several technical tools align at the same place, traders get a clearer read on the balance between buyers and sellers. Keeping that area intact preserves the recovery opportunity. A sustained break below it would undercut the bullish argument.

For now, support has held. The upside hurdles to watch are:

  • 7,716.98: The 200-hour moving average.

  • 7,741.75: The 100-hour moving average.

Those moving averages will tell whether buyers can gain a stronger grip on the short-term trend.

Getting above the 200-hour moving average would be a positive development. Clearing the 100-hour moving average as well, and holding above both, would reinforce the bullish bias further.

If the rebound instead stalls at those levels, sellers would have a place to lean and drive price back toward support.

The S&P buyers defended a key zone below. They now have to prove themselves on the upside.

Nasdaq Composite: The 100-day moving average, once broken, is still the main obstacle

The Nasdaq Composite's chart position looks shakier after last week's drop took the index below its 100-day moving average at 26,246.89.

The encouraging side for buyers is that selling stopped ahead of the September low at 25,831.74. Sellers had the chance to extend the decline toward that low and came up short.

Today's recovery has carried the index to 26,164.45. That puts it closer to the 100-day moving average, but buyers still have more to prove.

The key levels are:

  • 26,246.89: The 100-day moving average and the next upside hurdle.

  • 26,164.45: Today's high so far.

  • 25,831.74: The September low and key downside support.

  • 25,006: The 200-day moving average below.

A moving average that once acted as support can turn into resistance once price slips beneath it. That makes the reaction around 26,246.89 important.

If buyers reclaim that level and remain above it, the recovery would gain credibility. If sellers hold it, the bounce could fade with the index still under a significant daily trend signal.

On the downside, losing 25,831.74 would weaken the support structure and open the way toward the 200-day moving average at 25,006.

Nasdaq 100: The floor below held, though resistance is still overhead

The Nasdaq 100 attracted buyers during Friday's trading near a support floor between 28,822 and 28,953.

Today the index has climbed to 29,213.76, putting some distance between price and that floor. Still, the recovery remains comfortably below the broken 100-day moving average at 29,557.95.

That is the obstacle buyers need to remove to improve the technical picture.

Until that happens, sellers stay in the game. They can point to trading below the 100-day moving average, while buyers can point to a successful defense of support.

The key levels are:

  • 29,557.95: The 100-day moving average and key upside resistance.

  • 29,213.76: Today's high so far.

  • 28,822–28,953: The support floor, with 28,822.67 the specific downside break level to watch.

  • 28,108: The 38.2% retracement of the advance from the April low.

  • 27,854: The 200-day moving average.

A sustained break below 28,822.67 would put the 38.2% retracement at 28,108 in focus, followed by the 200-day moving average at 27,854.

The 38.2% retracement reflects how much of the advance from the April low has been given back. It gives traders another gauge for judging the severity of the pullback and whether buyers can establish support.

Those lower targets remain conditional. Sellers would first need to break the floor that held on Friday.

A bounce is underway. Can buyers take the next step?

The positive development is that buyers appeared near support in all three indices. That gives traders defined areas against which to measure the recovery.

The resistance tests that still matter are:

  • S&P 500: The 200-hour and 100-hour moving averages need to be retaken.

  • Nasdaq Composite: It must climb back above the 100-day moving average and stay there.

  • Nasdaq 100: It needs to recapture its 100-day moving average while keeping the support floor underneath.

For now, buyers are making their move. The next test is whether they can push through resistance and force sellers to surrender more control.
