PBOC's daily yuan fix: 6.7156 per dollar, topping the 6.6783 prediction
PBOC set USD/CNY reference rate at 6.7156 vs 6.6783 estimate, and repo operations resulted in net 609.5 billion yuan withdrawal.
USDCHF dipped below the 100-hour MA and tested the 200-hour MA at 0.8257, setting up a battle between buyers and sellers.
The USDCHF pair is hovering close to its session lows after sliding beneath the 100-hour moving average at 0.82758. That move provided sellers with the technical signal to drive prices lower, and the decline extended to 0.8257, precisely where the 200-hour moving average sits. Since then, the pair has recovered slightly to around 0.8262, setting up an obvious point of conflict between bulls and bears.
The gap between these two moving averages carries significance. A drop below the 100-hour moving average tilted the short-term direction in favour of sellers. Yet, hitting the 200-hour moving average creates another decision point. The bears have already achieved a downside target. To tighten their grip, they must push beneath that level and maintain a position below it.
For the bulls, the same level gives them a chance to establish and cap their risk.
What buyers should consider: Set risk before entering
Why would a buyer step in while prices are dropping? A technical trade does not demand a conviction that the market has found a floor. It simply needs a reason to buy, a clear point where the trade would be invalidated, and enough profit potential to offset the risk.
A buyer positioning against the 200-hour moving average near 0.8257 counts on that level attracting demand. If the price remains above it and starts to climb, the trader profits from entering close to support. If the price breaks lower and selling increases, the basis for the trade weakens, offering the buyer a nearby exit point.
That illustrates a key trading principle: the moving average does not ensure a rebound. It gives a level that allows a trader to craft a strategy. Risk can be identified before entering, limited through a plan to exit, and accepted as part of the process.
What sellers should consider: Convert a view into a technical plan
Bearish traders can approach that same moving average from the other direction.
If a trader expects USDCHF to fall further, the 200-hour moving average becomes a level the price must reach, penetrate, and remain beneath. A bearish perspective alone does not confirm that sellers dominate. The price behaviour around support reveals whether other participants agree.
A lasting break below 0.8257, together with an inability to recover the moving average, would indicate buyers are losing that struggle. If a subsequent rally stalls below the moving average, the former support could flip into resistance. That would provide sellers with another benchmark for handling risk.
On the other hand, a brief dip below the moving average followed by a swift rebound would suggest a false breakdown. Sellers betting on further losses could be exposed if the market fails to stay below support.
Downside targets: What follows a breakdown?
If a lasting break lower occurs, the next target is the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement at 0.8224. That level lies near the upper edge of a swing area extending down to 0.82162.
These two levels together form another support region where traders will gauge whether the decline can persist. Reaching this area would fulfill another bearish objective. Breaking through itâand remaining beneathâwould further reinforce the case for lower prices.
A move below that zone would clear the path toward last week's low at 0.81905.
The recovery scenario: What buyers need to regain
If the 200-hour moving average holds, buyers would initially aim for a rebound toward the 100-hour moving average at 0.82758.
Holding support would be an early positive sign, but reclaiming that higher moving average would offer stronger evidence that buyers are taking back control. Such a move would also raise doubts about the earlier breakdown, increasing the likelihood of short covering.
Sustaining above the 100-hour moving average would bring yesterday's high at 0.8312 back into play.
The main takeaway: Allow price action to decide the trade
For now, 0.8257 serves as the primary indicator. Buyers can use it to manage risk on a support trade. Sellers require a sustained break beneath it to confirm the bearish lean.
The value of this technical level is that it provides both sides with a reference point. Traders can evaluate whether the market supports their position and recognise when the evidence shifts.
Form a view, but structure the trade around a level that defines your risk. Then let the price movement determine whether the trade deserves to remain active.
