Brandt's Biggest FX Bet Is Short EUR/JPY as Yen Strengthens
Peter Brandt's firm holds its largest futures and FX position in a short EUR/JPY trade as the yen gains on intervention and rate expectations.
USDCHF peaked at 0.83944, then fell to 0.82162 and is now consolidating in a tight range. Traders are watching for a break above 0.8274 or below 0.8216.
After reaching 0.83944 last Wednesday, its best since May 2025, the USDCHF saw its gains evaporate. Two days later, it had fallen to 0.82162, a loss of roughly 178 pips.
Since the trough on Friday, selling pressure has lessened, yet buyers have not assumed command. The pair has been moving inside a tight band, capped at about 0.8274 and supported near 0.8216, resulting in a range around 58 pips.
A narrow consolidation can last longer than participants anticipate. Nonetheless, following the steep sell-off, market participants will be alert for a decisive move. The technical framework gives clues where that next push might come from.
Support is maintained, but buyers still have tasks ahead.
On the downside, the primary support zone is formed by the 38.2% retracement of the climb from the August 20 low of 0.8224, along with Friday's trough of 0.82162.
Sellers must push below that level and hold there to add conviction to the next downward leg. Remaining above leaves the door ajar for another rotation to the range's top.
On the upside, the initial obstacle is the swing zone between 0.8263 and 0.8274. The declining 100-hour moving average, currently at 0.8268, lies within that area, giving sellers an extra technical reason to sell against it.
As the moving average drops further, its placement relative to the swing area shifts. For the moment, the pairing offers a well-defined resistance band. Buyers must take it back to demonstrate they can do more than just guard the lows.
What would a breakout imply?
A sustainable drop below 0.8216 would clear the path to 0.8182, then to the 50% midpoint at 0.81717. Beneath that level, traders would shift their attention to the 0.8140–0.8150 zone, and then to the ascending 100-day moving average at 0.8127.
On the upside, exceeding 0.8274 would provide buyers some relief, but the sinking 200-hour moving average at 0.8297 would soon become the next obstacle.
Clearing and holding above that moving average would reinforce the recovery narrative and bring the 0.8341–0.8348 swing zone into contention.
Until such breakouts materialize, sellers can take comfort in the recent steep decline, while buyers persist in defending a floor. Confirmation is required for any directional change.
Technical ladder for USDCHF:
The lesson in trading: Allow the price to validate any breakout.
When the market moves sideways, it is tempting to foresee a breakout and be trapped in another reversal across the range.
A better question is: What must the price do to validate your trade, and under what conditions would that assessment be incorrect?
For short sellers, a drop beneath 0.8216 requires follow through. A brief dip below that level that is quickly reversed above the support zone would be a caution signal. Those sellers would have missed their opportunity. If they cannot keep the price below the floor, some sellers may have to cover their positions.
For buyers, the same reasoning holds above 0.8274. A break provides a chance, but retaining that broken level and then taking on the 200-hour moving average is what would instill confidence.
The levels map out the risk. Price action indicates whether market participants are validating the breakout. Until that happens, honor the range and wait for the next impetus.
