Whales Keep Bitcoin Off Exchanges While Retail Deposits Climb to 6-Month Peak

Retail Bitcoin deposits to Binance hit a six-month high and now run 2.8 times whale deposits, which fell 36% since late August.

Small investors have sent close to twice as much Bitcoin (BTC) to Binance as they did in April, lifting deposits to a six-month peak. Whales, by contrast, have shifted in the opposite direction for nearly two months.

Retail and whale flows frequently move apart. CryptoQuant, an on-chain analytics firm, reports that retail deposits are running 2.8 times whale deposits.

Are Retail Investors Treating the Bounce as a Chance to Exit?

Data from CryptoQuant puts the 30-day retail figure at $10.75 billion, up from $5.5 billion in April. That leaves retail $6.95 billion ahead of the whale total.

Because the 30-day total combines deposits from the previous month, it evens out any single-day jumps.

Moving coins to an exchange is not the same as selling them, but it puts them in a place where sales can happen. The trend hints that smaller investors may be using the rally to exit at better prices.

That interpretation, however, is based on flow data rather than confirmed trades.

Would Rising Prices Keep Bitcoin Whales From Selling?

Whale deposits to Binance, by contrast, have fallen 36% since late August, from $5.9 billion to $3.8 billion.

Even at $3.8 billion, the volume is meaningful, so the drop is a slowdown rather than a stop.

The lack of urgency among large holders suggests they are not trying to distribute at current levels.

The figures only cover Binance, so other exchanges may show different flows.

This pattern is in line with earlier on-chain signals, when whales accumulated positions before the October US inflation report.

Bitcoin fell 3.3% in 24 hours after that report, but whale deposits have not increased since.

The split now creates a test of who will supply coins during a rebound. If prices keep climbing and whale deposits stay subdued, retail may provide most of the selling on Binance. If whales resume deposits, the recovery could draw sellers from both groups.
