Collins points to elevated uncertainty, keeps eye on inflation's breadth
Boston Fed President Susan Collins said uncertainty is high and she is watching how broad inflation pressures are before the next rate decision.
Williams sees no need for a 2027 rate hike, expects inflation to slow, and says one more hike this year is appropriate. Treasury yields and dollar fell.
Williams, in comments reported by Bloomberg News, stated he currently sees no necessity for a rate increase in 2027.
The adjustments in U.S. Treasury yields were as follows:
Treasury yields decreased after these remarks. The dollar index continued its decline, falling 0.36% to 102.17.
Williams' remarks are interpreted as dovish. He expects inflation to move toward the Fed's goal next year and at present sees no need for a rate increase in 2027. This eases some of the pressure on expectations for additional tightening, but it does not constitute a signal that rate reductions are forthcoming.
The initial response saw Treasury yields fall and the dollar weaken. The crucial term is “currently.” The inflation figures still need to corroborate his view. If price pressures stay persistent, that policy stance could be altered.
There is just a 14% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike from now through the end of the year.
For October, the probability of a rate increase stands at 19%.
