AUDUSD stuck in 35-pip range for three days. Will it break?

AUDUSD has traded in a 35-pip range for three days. Key levels include moving averages and range boundaries. Traders await a breakout.

Over the past three trading sessions, AUDUSD has oscillated within a tight band. The low touched 0.7005 and the high reached 0.70397. That equates to roughly 35 pips between extremes. While there has been considerable intra-range activity, neither buyers nor sellers have made significant headway.

The moving averages reveal a market lacking direction.

Within the range, two important technical levels are present: the 100-hour moving average around 0.7023 and the 100-day moving average at 0.70317. The price has fluctuated above and below these averages. An increase above the averages failed to produce sustained buying pressure. Similarly, a decrease below did not result in a prolonged decline. This seesawing price movement indicates that no clear control has been established.

Moving averages often serve as indicators of trading bias. Yet when the price oscillates across them within a confined range, the message is clear: conviction is weak and a catalyst is awaited.

Such a catalyst might emerge from economic releases, remarks from central banks, or a wider move in the dollar or risk appetite. The chart alone cannot predict the specific news driver. However, it provides reference points to assess if the market response alters the outlook.

What could strengthen the bulls' hand?

For buyers, clearing the 100-hour moving average at approximately 0.7023 is a first step. A rise above the 100-day moving average at 0.70317 would strengthen the bullish bias. But buyers must also push through and hold above the range top near 0.70397. That would push the price beyond the cap that has contained gains for three sessions.

A lasting breakout would target the 200-day moving average at 0.70535 and then the 50% retracement level at 0.70654. These would be the subsequent obstacles. Should the price move up but soon retreat below the range high and moving averages, the abortive breakout would cast doubt on buyer commitment.

What would empower the sellers?

On the negative side, a drop under the moving averages would redirect attention to the range floor near 0.7005. A decline below that support would bring the 200-hour moving average around 0.69979 into focus, then the swing zone near 0.6990. Sellers must penetrate these levels to extend the breakout. If the price dips below the range but swiftly recovers inside it, the bearish move would also lose credibility.

Prepare for the potential. Wait for price confirmation.

A tight trading range does not ensure an imminent large move. The range could persist, and a first breakout might fail. Still, skilled traders look ahead. They acknowledge the squeeze, pinpoint key levels, and devise strategies for both possibilities.

The key for AUDUSD is whether the next move beyond 0.7005–0.70397 can gather sufficient momentum to shift the market. The chance lies in a breakout that holds. Until that occurs, buyers and sellers remain deadlocked in the same tight contest.
