China's September Loan Beat Conceals Steeper Slide in Credit Demand

China's September bank lending beat expectations, but first-nine-month credit growth is still down 22% year on year, showing weak loan demand.

New lending by Chinese banks reached „1.08 trillion in September, topping the „975 billion consensus forecast. On the surface, that looks like a positive turn after several months of disappointing credit data. Even so, loan issuance is roughly 16% below the level recorded in September of last year. The cumulative numbers for the year so far do not paint a much brighter picture.

For the first nine months of 2026, Chinese banks extended „11.52 trillion in new loans. That lags the „14.75 trillion issued in the equivalent stretch of the previous year. In essence, new lending has dropped by a hefty 22% so far this year.

The data above reveal a great deal about where China's domestic economy currently stands.

The issue at the moment is not a lack of willingness among Chinese banks to provide loans. Rather, households and companies simply do not have much enthusiasm for borrowing in the current climate.

A large share of the blame dates to the property downturn that began in 2021. With real estate still weak, homebuyers see little reason to take out new mortgages. At the same time, companies are hardly hurrying to grow their operations while spending at home stays soft.

The People's Bank of China has also conceded that weaker credit expansion may become the standard situation, given that reduced borrowing by property developers and local government financing vehicles is outweighing the demand coming from newer sectors.

So the September uptick should not be over-interpreted. That number has to be seen in context, with China's credit recovery still facing a tough climb.

Beijing can certainly reduce the cost of borrowing and push banks to extend more credit. Persuading households and companies to take on additional debt, though, is an entirely different challenge.
