Gold challenges key moving average as bulls seek control

Gold tests its 100-hour moving average near $4043; buyers look for a sustained break to challenge further resistance.

Gold continues its upward move on the day, reaching the declining 100-hour moving average around $4043. This level acts as a near-term gauge for both buyers and sellers. A break above it, sustained, would boost buyer confidence following last week's steep drop. If it remains below, sellers keep the technical edge.

Selling pressure dominated under the hourly moving averages

The bearish trend gained speed after gold fell beneath its 100- and 200-hour moving averages near $4153 on October 19. Later attempts to bounce found sellers using those averages as resistance. That barrier held, giving traders a clear point to cap risk and keeping the sellers in charge.

On October 22, the metal dropped faster, moving further from the moving averages and breaking under the early October low near $4065. That breach opened the path for another decline, with the price hitting a low around $3974 on October 23.

The technical picture was straightforward: the moving averages held as resistance, support gave way, and sellers drove toward further downside targets.

The $4000 area becomes a turning point

Since hitting that low, gold has fluctuated above and below the round $4000 figure. Selling has slowed, and buyers have managed a recovery. Still, holding near $4000 is only one step. Buyers must also reclaim the resistance levels that shaped the slide.

Below the recent $3974 low, the wider chart shows a key zone between $3942 and $3959. That area includes lows from June and July and remains a critical floor. Sellers would need to push under that zone and stay below to unlock further downside momentum.

For now, buyers have kept the price above that support area and are testing the first major moving-average barrier.

The $4043 level serves as the immediate barometer

Today's rebound has moved the price back toward the 100-hour moving average near $4043. The key is whether sellers halt the advance there again or buyers manage a break and extend it.

A lasting move above would tilt the short-term bias toward buyers and turn the moving average into a close risk level. Buyers would then seek support to develop against it on a retest.

Conversely, a move above followed by a quick fall back would be a failed breakout. That would hurt the recovery and give sellers a reason to aim for $4000 and then $3974.

Above $4043, the next targets are $4065 and the 200-hour MA

If buyers can establish support above the 100-hour moving average, the next upside objective is near $4065, the early October low that broke during last week's decline. Former support can turn into resistance, making that another test of buyer strength.

Breaking above $4065 shifts attention to the falling 200-hour moving average near $4096.50. Moving above that level would put gold back above both hourly moving averages and strengthen the technical case for a broader recovery.

Buyers are making a push, but they still have more to do. The first task is to clear $4043 and stay above it. That would give them a base from which to target $4065 and then $4096.50. Until that happens, the rebound stays vulnerable to sellers leaning on resistance.
