BlackRock Exec: Fed Chair Kevin Warsh Sensitive to AI
BlackRock's Jeffrey Rosenberg said Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is sensitive to AI and that a hit to AI would be disinflationary, affecting bitcoin.
The ECB is set to keep rates unchanged at 2.50%. Lagarde's press conference will be the main event as markets watch for any hints on future moves.
Europe takes its turn in this week's central bank lineup as the ECB decision approaches. Following the previous day's excitement, today's event is expected to be far calmer.
Markets see roughly an 87% probability that the ECB will hold rates steady. This would leave the deposit rate at 2.50% after September's 25-basis-point increase. Unless there is a shock, the decision should be simple.
The key issue is whether ECB President Christine Lagarde can avoid providing traders with any cause to adjust their December outlook. Markets price in about a 64% chance of another rate hike before year-end. Policymakers are likely content to keep those expectations unchanged following today's move.
Inflationary pressures are increasing in Europe at a time when fiscal risks are prominent and growth is decelerating.
September data showed euro area annual headline inflation at 3.8%, core inflation at 2.5%, and services inflation at 3.2%. These figures support the argument for more tightening, even if energy prices are the main factor behind headline increases.
For now, policymakers will attempt to downplay the possibility of broader underlying inflation pressures or wage spillovers.
However, the situation in France is problematic. Turmoil in French government bonds has raised borrowing costs, tightening financial conditions without ECB action. This makes a quick rate hike less likely, especially given ongoing growth risks.
What should we anticipate from today's meeting?
The ECB statement will probably echo last month's tone, stressing ongoing inflation risks. But Lagarde's press conference will be the main focus.
Lagarde will likely stick to the usual approach: data-dependence, open options, and no firm December commitment. That is probably the most prudent path today.
The main market risk is Lagarde sounding overly worried about growth and bond yields, or inadvertently suggesting that the ECB is keen to tighten further. A dovish tone could pressure the euro and lower rate expectations, while a hawkish one could boost bond yields.
If Lagarde handles it well, the decision and press conference will be a non-event for markets. The absence of volatility would indicate she successfully managed expectations.
