Nasdaq indices climb as buyers push through key resistance levels

Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 break key resistance, targeting record highs. Buyers hold control as long as support zones hold.

The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 are trading significantly higher during today's session, with both benchmarks clearing notable technical resistance.

  • Nasdaq Composite: Gaining roughly 1.5%
  • Nasdaq 100: Advancing 600 points, or 2.0%, to 30,245 as of 10:36 AM ET

While the moves are striking, the key technical question now centers on whether the indices can sustain their positions above their respective breakout levels. If they do, buyers maintain control and can aim for the next significant peaks. Should prices slip back below those levels, the validity of today's breakouts could quickly erode.

Nasdaq Composite clears its swing area

The Nasdaq Composite gapped upward into a key swing zone spanning 26,676 to 26,856. Buyers then drove the index beyond the upper end of that range, with the price currently hovering near 26,922.

That move places buyers firmly in command.

That resistance band between 26,676 and 26,856 now flips into initial support. As long as the index holds above that zone—and especially above its lower edge at 26,676—buyers retain the technical edge.

The next key objective is the record high at 27,190.21. A climb above that level would push the Nasdaq Composite into unprecedented territory.

Conversely, a drop back below 26,676 would disappoint those seeking further gains following today's breakout. It would also heighten the prospect that the move past resistance was a false signal.

Should the price fall under 26,676 and remain there, traders would start focusing on the ascending 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages, situated between roughly 26,300 and 26,345.

Nasdaq Composite key technical levels

  • Current price: Around 26,922
  • Immediate support: 26,856
  • Key support zone: 26,676 to 26,856
  • Bullish target: All-time high at 27,190.21
  • Deeper support: 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages between 26,300 and 26,345

Nasdaq 100 extends past the August high

The Nasdaq 100 also gapped sharply higher, moving beyond its swing zone between 29,669 and 29,946.

The buying momentum then carried the index through the August swing high at 30,195 (the high reached 30255.15). The price is currently trading around 30,245, up roughly 600 points, or 2.0%.

Surpassing the August high marks another positive technical development. It clears a visible resistance ceiling and paves the way toward the June highs between 30,587 and 30,762 (the all-time high price).

That region represents the next significant upside test. Buyers would need to push above 30,762 and hold there to confirm another bullish breakout.

On the downside, the first close-risk area is the former swing zone between 29,669 and 29,946. As long as the price stays above that zone, buyers remain firmly in charge.

A slip below 29,946 would serve as an initial warning, while a break under 29,669 would undermine the bullish structure and redirect attention to the hourly moving averages.

The 200-hour moving average sits near 29,427, while the 100-hour moving average is around 29,320. Those levels would emerge as the next downside targets if the breakout falters.

Nasdaq 100 key technical levels

  • Current price: Around 30,245
  • August swing high: 30,195
  • Close-risk support: 29,946
  • Key support zone: 29,669 to 29,946
  • Upside target zone: 30,587 to 30,762
  • 200-hour moving average: 29,427
  • 100-hour moving average: 29,320

Why the breakout areas matter

When price breaks above an established resistance area, that same zone often turns into support. Traders who sold near resistance may look to cover if the market stays above it, while buyers who missed the initial move may view a pullback toward the breakout area as a chance to enter.

That does not guarantee support will hold. It simply means the former resistance zone gives traders a well-defined reference point for gauging whether buyers or sellers are gaining the upper hand.

In both indices, the technical path is clear:

  • Hold above the breakout zones: Buyers stay in control, with the next major peaks in view.
  • Fall back into the breakout zones: Some bullish momentum starts to fade.
  • Break below the zones and stay below: The breakouts would be questioned, and traders would turn to the 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages.

Bottom line

Both Nasdaq indices have achieved meaningful technical breakouts to the upside.

The Nasdaq Composite is targeting its all-time high at 27,190.21, while the Nasdaq 100 is eyeing the June high zone between 30,587 and 30,762.

Buyers have the upper hand, but holding above former resistance is now critical. For the Nasdaq Composite, that means staying above 26,676 to 26,856. For the Nasdaq 100, it means remaining above 29,669 to 29,946.

Stay above, and the buyers can keep pressing toward the highs. Move back below, and today's bullish breakouts would begin to lose some of their luster.
