For the 10th consecutive year, the trading session after Labor Day closed in the red. The streak is chalked up to the depressing feeling that comes with summer winding down.

The S&P 500 lost 0.6% on the day, a decline within the usual range except for the sharp selloffs seen in 2024 and 2020. AI anxieties returned as the main weight, pulling Nvidia down 2.1% and MCFT down 1.2%. Healthcare bore the brunt of the session's selling: Amgen dropped 10%, while the rest of the sector posted losses of 2-3%. By contrast, oil companies, Tesla, Intel, AMD and Broadcom turned in relative strength.

Closing changes:

  • S&P 500 -0.6%
  • Nasdaq Comp -0.3%
  • Russell 2000 -0.3%
  • DJIA -1.2%
