September US Existing Home Sales at 3.99 Million, Topping Estimate
US existing home sales rose 1.5% in September to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.99 million, exceeding the 3.95 million estimate.
The US dollar index hit a fresh 18-month high near 102.56, weighing on bitcoin and equities as traders anticipate another Fed rate hike.
The greenback's advance is creating headwinds for bitcoin and Wall Street. Monday saw the US Dollar Index (DXY) climb to an 18-month peak of roughly 102.56, with bitcoin stuck near $83,000 and the Nasdaq edging down.
The dollar's strength is driven by rising market bets that the Federal Reserve will deliver another rate increase before the year ends. Elevated rates boost the appeal of dollar-denominated assets, which can divert capital from volatile investments.
Bitcoin carries no yield. With US Treasury bonds now paying over 5%, there is increased incentive for investors to shift funds into lower-risk holdings.
A firmer dollar tends to curb appetite for speculative plays, especially digital currencies and fast-expanding tech shares.
Signs of strain are already appearing. Over the last seven days, bitcoin fell close to 3%, and ethereum saw even steeper declines. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also dropped on Monday, compounded by rising oil costs.
On October 8, the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.35%, the steepest level in 24 years. That same week saw a $166 billion inflow into money-market funds.
BREAKING: 🇺🇸 The US dollar index (DXY) just hit its highest level since April 2025. A stronger dollar means traders are still not convinced that Fed is done with hiking rates.

The Federal Reserve's policy rate remains at 3.75%–4%. Based on futures pricing, there is about an 87% probability of an additional increase by December, though the majority of traders anticipate no move this month.
Beth Hammack, president of the Cleveland Fed, cautioned that stubborn inflation might grow harder to rein in.
“With each passing month, persistently elevated inflation raises the risks of an inflationary mindset becoming entrenched in the economy,” Hammack said.
The coming CPI release on Wednesday may set the course for markets. Forecasters see annual inflation climbing to 3.7% from 3.4%, with core prices projected to advance 0.2% on a monthly basis.
A hotter-than-anticipated inflation figure could push the dollar even higher, intensifying downward pressure on bitcoin and equities. A cooler reading, by contrast, might ease fears of further tightening and provide some respite.
Even after upgrading global equities on Monday, Goldman Sachs cited higher interest rates as a primary near-term concern.
