UMich Sentiment Drops to 47.8 in September, Below Expectations

University of Michigan consumer sentiment for September came in at 47.8, below the 51.0 forecast.

  • Current conditions index came in at 50.9, missing the 51.3 forecast
  • Expectations index fell to 45.8, well short of the 50.5 estimate
  • Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.6%, above the 4.0% projection
  • Five-year outlook for inflation reached 3.4%, slightly higher than the 3.3% consensus

These inflation expectation figures could push the Federal Reserve toward raising interest rates at its meeting next week. In my view, a hike is all but certain now, with the market pricing in an 82% probability.
