The US government has committed up to $215 million to construct a device that could represent a milestone in quantum computing, with potential long-term implications for Bitcoin.
On Thursday, the Department of Energy launched the Quantum Genesis Q Competition. The program calls on private firms to exhibit fault-tolerant quantum computers that are "scientifically relevant," with a minimum of 100 logical qubits and hundreds of millions of reliable operations.
The broader initiative aims for deployment by 2028.
Current quantum computers remain far from flawless. Errors rapidly disrupt extended computations. Fault tolerance employs error correction to maintain reliable calculations, significantly enhancing the technology's utility for rigorous scientific work.
For Bitcoin, this could pose a serious risk.

Bitcoin developers are already exploring defenses. Draft proposals BIP 360 and BIP 361 describe ways to limit public-key exposure and eventually transition away from current vulnerable signature methods.
Such a transition would require the involvement of wallets, exchanges, custodians, and users. It could span several years.
The DOE competition moves fault-tolerant quantum computing toward a concrete engineering goal. Based on current hardware and research estimates, Bitcoin still has time.
The exact deadline is uncertain, which is why the migration discussion is growing increasingly difficult to overlook.
