Euro rebounds as midterm wins weigh on dollar and markets reprice fiscal outlook
The euro rebounded versus the dollar as Democratic midterm wins pointed to fiscal restraint; the ECB held rates but Lagarde said a hike was debated.
USDCAD buyers gain momentum after support holds, aiming to clear the 200-hour MA and 50% retracement.
USDCAD is climbing in the North American session, following a period where sellers halted the decline close to a key downside objective over roughly the past three trading sessions. That support provided a base for buyers. The task ahead is to surpass and hold above the technical levels that block a more substantial rebound.
Support has held, giving buyers a chance.
The swing zone between 1.3948 and 1.3963 has served as a key gauge since August, with frequent reactions occurring there. The 61.8% Fibonacci retracement of the rally from August's low to October's high is located at 1.39497, adding to the area's significance.
Sellers attempted to push below that support but failed to maintain a downside break. This has allowed buyers to move higher in today's trading.
Support holding is just the initial phase. Buyers must now demonstrate they can reclaim technical levels lost during the steep drop from the October high around 1.42984.
The 200-hour moving average is the next major obstacle.
The recovery has lifted the pair back above the 100-hour moving average at 1.39809. This provides buyers with a nearby level to define risk as they attempt to extend the upward move. As long as the price remains above that level, buyers can push higher.
The next significant barrier is the declining 200-hour moving average at 1.40012. Slightly above that lies the 50% retracement of the August-to-October advance at 1.40162.
These levels are the next challenges for buyers. Clearing the 200-hour MA and then the midpoint would lend more technical credibility to the recovery. If the price stalls beneath them, sellers can use resistance to push the pair back toward support. Both sides can define and manage risk, creating a battleground for traders.
What are the subsequent upside objectives?
A rise above 1.40162 would direct attention to the 100-day moving average at 1.40454.
Beyond that, the swing zone and the previously broken 38.2% retracement between 1.4068 and 1.40828 form the next resistance area. Buyers would need to demonstrate strength there.
The recovery must proceed step by step. Support holding has kept buyers active. Overcoming the upside obstacles would grant them greater control.
What could undermine the rebound?
A fall back under the 100-hour moving average at 1.39809 would reduce the recovery's momentum and refocus attention on the 1.3948–1.3963 support zone.
Should sellers manage to drop beneath that zone and remain below, the previous failed attempts to break lower would give way to a more significant decline. The next substantial downside target would be the 200-day moving average at 1.38899.
At present, buyers have a chance. The 200-hour moving average serves as the next indicator of their ability to extend the move.
From an educational perspective, holding support creates a chance, while breaking resistance establishes control.
A market can cease its decline without instantly becoming bullish. This is why it is useful to distinguish support that manages risk from resistance that validates progress.
For USDCAD, the swing zone and the 61.8% retracement helped halt the drop. The rise above the 100-hour moving average is an early encouraging sign. Climbing above the 200-hour MA and the 50% midpoint would reinforce the bullish argument.
These levels offer a roadmap. Buyers can use support as a foundation, gauge progress at resistance, and identify when a failed break alters the outlook.
