Brandt's Biggest FX Bet Is Short EUR/JPY as Yen Strengthens
Peter Brandt's firm holds its largest futures and FX position in a short EUR/JPY trade as the yen gains on intervention and rate expectations.
USDJPY buyers have repeatedly tested resistance near the 200-day moving average (158.565) since September 23 but failed to sustain breakouts, keeping sellers…
The resistance area has been repeatedly defended by sellers.
Since September 23, the USDJPY technical narrative has revolved around two important levels: the 50% retracement of the drop from the July 2026 high to the September low, at 158.419, and the 200-day moving average, now at 158.565.
The midpoint has stayed constant, whereas the 200-day moving average has crept up from roughly 158.42. Combined, these levels form a resistance zone that sellers have used to lean on the market and drive prices down.
That resistance has beene tested at least ten times, with three occasions where price broke above both levels. The peak was 159.019, achieved in the rally starting September 24. Another high was 158.72 on October 12.
Each breakout gave buyers an opportunity. But in every instance, they could not maintain the upward momentum.
Downward moves have been inconsistent, with swing lows around 157.524 and 157.425 marking the lower boundary. Price has mostly traded within the red box.
Lessons from the range
When a clearly identifiable midpoint and a longer-term moving average are near each other, they form a helpful decision point. Sellers can work against this area as it provides a reference for when their position becomes questionable. Buyers understand that breaking above and holding would improve their argument.
These levels set the risk. Price behavior around them indicates if that risk pays off.
So far, the persistent breakdown above resistance shows that buyers find it difficult to convert a breakout into a sustained move. Passing through a level is just the initial step. Follow-through action and the capacity to remain above on a pullback offer stronger confirmation of a shift in control.
Hourly moving averages serve as a near-term indicator
Within the range, the 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages are located.
Admittedly, price has crossed above and below these averages, occasionally following them and at other times passing through easily. This is typical for a ranging market. Both buyers and sellers feint and dodge, but neither lands a decisive blow.
This also offers a lesson: a moving-average break within a range can alter short-term bias without confirming a larger trend. Traders should still watch the next support or resistance.
Currently, price is above both hourly moving averages around 158.18, giving buyers the short-term edge. However, the advance has stalled before the 200-day moving average. Sellers are still in the fight.
What would give each side control?
For buyers, the task ahead is to break above and stay above the 200-day moving average at 158.565. That would firm up the bullish outlook and refocus attention on previous failed-break highs such as 158.72 and 159.019.
For sellers, remaining under the 200-day moving average preserves their defense. A drop back below the 50% midpoint at 158.419 would drain some buyer momentum and shift focus to the houtly moving averages near 158.18.
A sustained fall below those averages would return the short-term advantage to sellers and open the path to the lower swing areas.
For now, buyers are landing blows and sellers are near the ropes. Yet both sides have endured damage in this prolonged range. Buyers are displaying strength. They still must clear resistance and hold to take stronger control of the contest.
