Bitcoin Slips Below Key Moving Average as Weekend Approaches

Bitcoin closed below its 50-day SMA for the first time since August, with liquidation clusters and ETF outflows tilting the odds lower.

For the first time since August, bitcoin (BTC) ended the session beneath its 50-day simple moving average (SMA). The weekend approaches with volatility still tightening.

The probability of a range breakdown is rising, with liquidation clusters, increasing leverage and recent ETF outflows all pointing that way. The data overall leans bearish.

Bitcoin Volatility and the 50-Day SMA Breakdown

The cryptocurrency was trading at $81,715, a 0.39% decline over the past 24 hours. On the daily chart, BTC gave up the 50-day SMA after a fresh rejection near $85,000.

The move out of the range concludes roughly a month of back-and-forth trading between approximately $81,000 and $85,000. During that period, violent moves wiped out both long and short positions without establishing a clear direction.

The Oct. 22 daily bar recorded one of the highest selling volumes seen this month. The 0.618 Fibonacci retracement level at $82,614 has therefore turned into resistance.

Meanwhile, the Bollinger Bands have tightened to a width of about $6,000. During the August volatility expansion, they were about $30,000 wide.

The bands touched their narrowest point in roughly two and a half years earlier this week. Historically, such compression often precedes a sharp expansion in volatility.

Bollinger Bands alone do not indicate direction. The fact that the 50-day SMA was lost shifts the probability toward the downside.

Liquidation Clusters Could Drive Weekend Action

According to Coinglass, the biggest concentration of liquidation orders on Binance lies between $82,500 and $82,650. That cluster is roughly 1% above the current price and coincides with the 0.618 Fibonacci level.

On the downside, leveraged positions are concentrated near $80,850 and again around $80,000. Earlier in October, bitcoin dropped to about $80,400, triggering over $1 billion in liquidations.

Since Binance represents only about 20% of total open interest, the liquidation map shows just a part of the market. Nevertheless, these clusters identify price levels at which forced orders could accelerate a move.

Leverage continues to build within the range. Open interest stands at $54.09 billion, and the funding rate weighted by open interest is still positive at 0.0068%, meaning long positions are paying a fee to stay in.

The funding rate has cooled from around 0.010% earlier this week, indicating that some excess leverage has been cleared. But positioning has not flipped to the short side, which is typically needed for a sustained squeeze.

This configuration could encourage a quick sweep to $82,600, followed by a flush of late longs. The weekend might amplify that move.

CME futures, holding $9.36 billion in open interest, will close for the weekend alongside US spot ETFs. Offshore perpetual markets with thinner liquidity will set the price instead.

ETF Outflows Add to Bearish Sentiment

Institutional interest has also cooled. US spot bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of 3,964 BTC on Oct. 22, worth roughly $322 million, according to Glassnode.

Those outflows came after two days of strong inflows that backed the push toward $85,000. Every major rally this year has relied on a multi-day inflow streak.

There were already several outflow days earlier in October. Without renewed buying, spot demand may struggle to absorb a leverage flush.

Bitcoin's Path Points to Bull Market Support Band

A daily close below $81,000 could open the path to the 0.5 Fibonacci level at $77,876, about 4.6% lower than the current price.

Below that lies the bull market support band, which spans from the 21-week exponential moving average (EMA) at $76,700 to the 20-week SMA at $72,500.

The 0.382 Fibonacci level at $73,139 adds confluence near the lower edge. Benjamin Cowen, a member of BeInCrypto’s Market Intelligence Expert Council, also flagged this risk.

Bitcoin getting a daily close below the 50D SMA likely sends it to the bull market support band.

A dip into the band would not automatically end the broader uptrend. But a weekly close below $72,500 could challenge the bull market structure.

Conversely, holding above $82,600 could trigger a squeeze toward $85,000. A daily close above $84,000 would negate the bearish setup.

At this stage, the indicators point to a turbulent weekend rather than a quiet one, with sellers holding the edge.
