China continued its gold buying spree in August, strengthening a major structural demand pillar for the precious metal.

The PBOC announced that its gold reserves were 76.73 million troy ounces at end-August, up from 76.08 million ounces in July. This represents the 22nd consecutive month of buying.

Meanwhile, the reported value of China's gold reserves rose to $350.08 billion, compared with $306.35 billion in July.

It is important to note that the $43.7 billion jump does not equate to China buying that sum of gold in the month. The value difference primarily stems from the steep increase in gold's market price, combined with the additional physical purchases.

Why is China still buying gold?

The overarching narrative is largely about reserve diversification. Beijing possesses massive foreign-exchange reserves, which have traditionally been heavily weighted toward dollar-based instruments. Gold provides an asset with no sovereign credit risk and lower direct exposure to the financial system of another nation. Therefore, this is the primary driver of China's gold demand.

What does this mean for financial markets?

The PBOC's ongoing purchases create a significant structural support for gold demand. Additionally, there remains considerable speculation that China's actual gold buying far exceeds what is disclosed in the monthly reports. Nevertheless, this does not mean that prices will move upward without interruption. However, it does at least suggest that any sharp declines or major corrections could be more likely to draw in buyers due to sustained central bank demand.
