AUDUSD rally meets resistance at 100-day moving average
AUDUSD recovery stalled at 100-day MA while buyers defend 100-hour MA support.
NZDUSD buyers have defended the 100-hour moving average this week, but the pair still faces the 38.2% retracement at 0.57258.
Across four of the five trading sessions this week, the NZDUSD has pushed upward, handing buyers a foundation after the steep fall from the August peak. The rebound has featured a failed move below the rising 100-hour moving average and two solid tests of that level today.
That pattern gives buyers reason for encouragement. When the price retreats, demand appears, and a technical support line is being guarded.
Still, more is required. Price action continues to sit under the 38.2% retracement of the decline from August to October. Until that zone gives way, the advance looks like a limited correction inside a larger downtrend.
A 422-pip slide has left buyers with a big obstacle to overcome.
The NZDUSD lost 422 pips, or 7.05%, between the August 21 peak around 0.5986 and the October 14 bottom near 0.5564.
That counts as a large decline. Sellers were in control of the trend, and every bounce gave them a chance to sell at a higher price.
Demand for the pair began to strengthen on October 16. Since then, the price has ground upward, moving back above its hourly moving averages and creating some separation from the October low.
The issue now is whether buyers can turn that early recovery into a larger gain. To manage that, support below must keep holding while resistance overhead starts to break.
Sellers had their opportunity underneath the 100-hour MA.
The previous session's move lower - the only drop over the last four trading days - took the price back under the rising 100-hour moving average. That gave sellers a chance to restore some control and disrupt the rebound.
The move under the average was not sustainable.
Instead, the price rebounded above the moving average. The sellers were given an opening but could not make use of it.
Today saw two more trips back to the 100-hour MA, and buyers emerged on each one. That helps confirm the average as a line participants are watching and leaning on.
The 100-hour MA sits near 0.56835 and is heading higher. As long as price remains above it, the near-term bias stays moderately positive. Buyers now have both a technical motive to participate and a close point for setting their risk.
The adjacent swing area adds to the support structure.
The average is also found inside a swing area running from 0.56736 to 0.56860.
Those two elements combine to make this an important support zone. Buyers would prefer to see quotes remain above the ascending 100-hour MA. If the price drops below it, the next downside check is the bottom of the swing area at 0.56736.
Falling through both on a sustained basis would sap the recovery and hand sellers added confidence. The 200-hour MA around 0.56553 would then become the next level to watch on the downside.
For now, though, the repeated holds at the 100-hour MA today suggest buyers are still protecting their position.
The next obstacle higher is the 38.2% retracement.
Looking higher, the main destination is the 38.2% retracement at 0.57258.
The minimum correction of a trend move, by this measure, is to reach and break the 38.2% retracement. That would help confirm that buyers have reclaimed a meaningful share of the drop.
The NZDUSD has yet to get over that hurdle.
Holding support is one requirement of the recovery. The next requirement is to break resistance. A climb above 0.57258, with buyers able to hold it, would bolster their case and clear a path toward another push higher.
The 50% midpoint is aligned with a previous swing area.
Beyond the 38.2% retracement, focus turns to the 0.5761–0.5777 swing area.
That zone has been the site of several historical turns on the chart. The 50% midpoint at 0.57756 is also found close to the upper boundary of the area, giving traders another technical signal to concentrate on.
Reaching that area would claw back about half of the August-to-October slide. It would also place the price in a stretch where sellers may try to lean against resistance.
More work remains before that can happen. Buyers are building their case, and this week's action is providing them with encouragement. Now they must keep the 100-hour MA beneath the price and break through 0.57258 for the climb to go on.
