  • France's final manufacturing PMI for September came in at 50.6, against a preliminary reading of 50.3
  • Previous month's figure was 51.1

The breakdownThe upward revision, however, still signals a slowdown in French manufacturing activity during September relative to the prior month. The sector saw further softening as new orders kept falling, purchasing volumes were trimmed and price pressures picked up.

On the details, factory output growth held up in September, marking consecutive expansions for the first time since the year's opening two months. Meanwhile, new order inflows shrank for a fifth straight month as customers held back. Even so, the pace of decline eased and was the mildest seen during the current downturn stretch.

Elsewhere, price pressures mounted in September, with the pace of inflation accelerating for both input costs and output charges month on month. That was the first instance since May where both moved in that direction, though the respective PMI sub-indexes stayed beneath their 2026 peaks.

For the ECB, the more notable development is the renewed pickup in price pressures. Overall, the French figure adds to the wider euro area picture, though attention now turns to the German and eurozone PMI releases to see whether the same pattern of weak demand alongside firmer price pressures appears elsewhere.

What does the data measure? The manufacturing PMI polls businesses on factors such as output, new orders, employment, supplier delivery times and inventories. A reading above 50 indicates growth versus the prior month, while a figure below 50 points to contraction.

Why does it matter to markets? As the euro area's second-largest economy, France's PMI offers an early gauge of industrial momentum. Market participants will be especially keen to see whether the final print confirms manufacturing staying above the 50 mark.

How does this fit the broader economic picture? The French economy has been delivering somewhat conflicting signals. September's flash composite PMI showed private sector activity returning to expansion, driven mainly by services, while manufacturing momentum lost steam.

What is the potential market impact?Very limited in isolation. For a start, services is the stronger engine of the French economy, making the manufacturing reading less impactful. The greater market significance will emerge from how France sits alongside the subsequent German and eurozone manufacturing PMI figures, particularly regarding growth and price pressures.

Current relevance to markets?Moderate. The final headline number may not move markets much by itself, but the details on new orders, output and prices could provide a more meaningful signal for the ECB's policy outlook.
